The name Jack the Ripper originated from a letter to police from someone who claimed to be the Whitechapel Murderer, this was found to be false however the identity of the murderer was never discovered.
In total their was 11 unsolved murders in the East End from 1888 to 1891 however only 5 those of Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Jane Kelly were believed to be from the same killer. Conspiracy theories about possible suspects including some of London’s elite have existed ever since.
